Available packages subdirectories simply hold some fakefiles. These fakefiles are virtual regular files, or namely, the only type of regular files found in PackageFS. They contain no data at all, but provide access to specific information. In the current prototype implementation these entries store an fakefile. As the user reads such a file, he gets some information about the package. Of course they depend on the ability of the low-level package manager to retrieve metadata. Figure 5.3 shows the gcc-3.3 fakefile in our testing enviroment.
